WHAT IS A BREAST AUGMENTATION SURGERY?
Augmentation mammoplasty is a procedure used to get the shape of breasts enlarged or modified. It is a surgical intervention that is done when breasts are unproportional with the rest of the body and when breasts have different structures with an evident asymmetry, i.e., one breast is smaller than the other one. Both to get breasts matched and their size increased, the most usual method nowadays is the silicone prosthesis (implant). It is one of the methods that offers better results compared to others, such as partial augmentation through reconstruction with adipose tissue.
The main base of the prosthesis is silicone, although the filling of the same may contain different components, all of them tested in search of the best result both in terms of esthetics and touch and, also, the greatest comfort.
Since there are different types of prostheses, the best you can do is to ask to a doctor which is the most convenient one for the type of result we are looking for.
WHAT ARE SILICONE PROSTHETICS OR IMPLANTS?
Silicone prostheses are specifically designed to get breats corrected, molded or enlarged.
The most commonly used prostheses are silicone gel prostheses that offer a tremendously natural look and touch and the saline solution, made of a physiological serum composed of water and salt that is used as a filler in the breast prosthesis. The latter are harder to touch.
WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW BEFORE GOING THROUGH SURGERY
After breast augmentation surgery, the most common symptoms are mild pain symptoms and small edema. In a few cases, a slight increase or, sometimes, a slight decrease in the sensitivity of the nipple has also been detected, as well as a modest sensation of numbness in the nipple area. Something that happens in cases where the body detects the presence of a foreign body.
Rupture of the prosthesis is very rare. Problems related to breast prostheses, either during surgery or after surgery during their optimal life span, are unusual. Despite what some publications have been repeating, there is no medical record that these make the risk of developing breast cancer increase.
It is key that, before undergoing surgery, you discuss with the doctor what your expectations are, what you want to correct, how you want it to look and find out about the type of surgery you will go through, the type of prosthesis chosen, the type of anesthesia, the time the surgery will take and the postoperative period.
THE OPERATION
Breast augmentation surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia and lasts approximately 1 to 2 hours. An incision of about 4-5 cm is made to place the prosthesis. This incision can be made in:
The fold of the breast (submammary)
The lower part of the breast (circumareolar)
The armpit
The nipple, through endoscopic surgery.
The choice of the prosthesis will always be based on the patient’s breast.
POSTOPERATIVE
After surgery, pain is usually minimal. Prosthesis rarely gets the arms’ movement limited and, when this happens, it is only for a few days.
During that time, a postoperative bra and a bandage will be used to get the intervened area covered no longer than 10-12 days. It will not be necessary to get points removed as these get internally dissolved. Therefore, there is no need of an intervention to get them removed.
Although in the first days some inflammation or edema may appear in the nipples, the same will disappear shortly after. In fact, patients get back to normal life 3-4 days later. Three weeks after the replacement of a prosthesis or a breast augmentation surgery you can forget about and get back to work. Athlete patients should wait to resume their activity for about two months.
Breast augmentation surgery, in addition to excellent esthetical and touch results, helps to improve other aspects related to mental health and psychological structure of patients.
SILICONE BREAST AUGMENTATIONS
Silicone implants for breast augmentation have been used for more than 60 years. Since then, there has been a tremendous improvement in implant technology that has made silicones safer than ever. All implants we use are FDA approved by Allergan, Mentor or Polytech and all our implants have all the manufacturer’s warranties.
